American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino is nominated in the Golden Globe Awards for her role in The Color Purple. With this being her first time, Barrino is extremely grateful that she didn’t pass on the opportunity.

Fantasia is Nominated for Best Female Actor in Golden Globe Awards

The singer received a Golden Globe nomination Monday for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in The Color Purple. In a recent interview with Variety, she recalled screaming and running around the room the moment she knew the good news. To celebrate the milestone, the singer first called her husband.

“I pick up my phone as soon as I wake up and call my husband, and as soon as he picks up, he’s yelling. And my mom is screaming. I go into worry mode. I’m like, ‘What’s wrong?’ And they’re like, ‘Wait, you don’t know!’ My husband says, ‘Congratulations, queen. You’ve been nominated for a Golden Globe.’ And I literally went, ‘Waaaaaah.’ I had to hang up and call them back because I literally was dreaming,” she said.

Recalling her journey, Barrino revealed that she didn’t think she’ll ever play the role of Celie again. The actress initially portrayed Celie on Broadway.

“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” she said.

Be that as it may, the American Idol alum is glad she still took the role. Of what she thinks should be the next move, Barrino admitted she’s got no concrete plans yet.

“I don’t know what’s next,” she said. “I would love to do more movies and challenge myself in other roles because I love working. But most importantly, I want to help heal as Celie did in this story. I am so proud of her. I want to share my home and bless people with resources and the things they need.”

She Talks How She Relates to Her Role as Celie

Elsewhere in her interview with Variety, Barrino discussed how she resonates with her role on The Color Purple. According to the actress, Celie represented her being Black.

“Her character was the first role that’d I’d ever seen played on a big screen that I could relate to — a Black woman who had a broad nose and big lips, and the things that she had went through,” she said.

According to the American Idol singer, she was “very young” when she watched Color Purple. Barrino stated that she was “blown away” after seeing “someone that looked like me.” Watching this empowered her completely, especially she was bullied a lot growing up.

“I’m so flippin’ glad that I did not allow fear to stand in my way. I put it in the trunk, and I continued to drive the car. And because of that, so many women, men, white, Black, young, old, will be healed. I’m glad I did it,” she said. “We all stepped over into our ancestors’ shoes. We gave our all and I’m so grateful and honored.”
